Poison / Tesla - Albany, NY May 9, 2017 - Concert Review with Videos and Pictures

I'm gonna complain a little about the dumbass ticket sale plan for this show before I get into the review and videos and photos (the show itself was really good).

A couple of months ago, a couple of minutes before the 10am onsale, I got an email with a presale code for Poison (with Tesla opening) doing a headlining show at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.  Wasn't sure who might be able to go because it's such a busy time for shows so I just got one - the cheapest available ($25 plus $12 service charge) figuring someone else would grab a cheap ticket and join me when the show came around. I scored a second row aisle seat in the upper level basically straight back from the stage in the back of the arena.  A good price and not too shabby since Times Union is a relatively small arena.

Well the show came around last night, May 9, 2017 and it was a bit odd how the tickets were handled.  My buddy Kev and his wife said for $37 each, they'd be into it and looked into getting tix and suddenly the cheapest seat available were first level for $46.50.  With charges a pair would cost about $130 which they felt was not worth it so they skipped it.

I figured it was one of those cases where they were closing the upper level due to ticket sales and anyone like me who had such a ticket would get to the show and be told to go to a desk and would get the ticket traded in for an open first level seat which must be almost full.

Got to the arena as the opening band (before Tesla - I missed their name) was playing and the upper level was open!  I went up there and basically there were maybe tops 200 people spread out throughout the thousands of seats in the upper level.  I had no problem sitting up there in my seat (and during Poison would move way closer over on C.C.'s side) but why the hell would you stop selling the cheap seats up there if you were keeping it open.  Not sure how many casual walk up fans would have attended but I know of at least two ticket sales they didn't get.  Anyway rant over.

So I found out where the entrance to my section was, grabbed a beer and checked out the merch booth during which time the opening band's set ended.  I went up to my seat and about 5 minutes before Tesla hit the stage, there were maybe 1000 people in the arena.

As soon as the lights went down and Tesla came on about 2000 or so more people streamed back into their lower level seats.  I'd guess about 3000 people as Tesla's killer set started and it slowly grew over the course of their 50 minutes or so time on stage.  By the time they ended and for Poison's following set I'd say attendance was in the area of 5000.

I've seen Tesla plenty of times and usually in opening slots like this you get more or less a greatest hits set and that's what we got last night.  Opening with "Edison's Medicine" and closing with "Modern Day Cowboy" in between we got basically all of their singles including "Hang Tough", "Love Song", "Little Suzi" and of course their cover of "Signs".

Tesla always bring the good and last night was no different killer set!

During the short break before Poison came on I decided to move over closer to the stage as there were plenty of seats to choose from.

Poison opened the show with the title track from their debut album "Look What The Cat Dragged In" and followed it with hit after hit for the remainder of their set.

"Ride The Wind" was next and when they followed it with "Talk Dirty To Me", it brought the crowd to the next level.  The group of eight gals sitting next to me all hopped up to watch a few rows closer at the railing staying there dancing and rocking out for the rest of the set.

"Cry Tough" was next and appears to be the only extra song Poison are playing at these headlining shows which is the only bummer.  The other additions to the setlist seems to be solos by each band member...would have preferred another song or two instead.  Here's the video I shot of "Cry Tough"

Bret came out with his acoustic guitar and said this was one they don't usually play this early in the set and he played a heartfelt version of "Something To Believe In".  Here's video I took of that.

Next Bret grabbed his harmonica and actually did a harmonica solo which lead into a spirited version of their cover of Loggins and Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance".

It was C.C. DeVille's time in the spotlight next with his guitar solo which lead into "Fallen Angel".

Drummer Rikki Rockett then performed his drum solo.

This went directly into bassist Bobby Dall's solo.  Here's the video I took of that.

This went into the massive huge sing along of Poison's first #1 hit "Every Rose Has its Thorn" and was followed by the set ending "Nothin' But A Good Time."

After a real short encore break the band came back, joined by a group of fans, for a cover of Kiss' "Rock and Roll All Nite" to end the night.  Here's video of that one.

It's too bad my buddy and his wife didn't join me.  Poison was as good if not better than the first time I saw them just over 30 years ago opening for Ratt.  A fun way to spend a Tuesday night.

MORC Day 2 part 3: Sebastian Bach / Steve Vai / Frank Hannon / Akira Takasaki Photos and Video Review February 21, 2016 Miami FL

And we've reached the end of Day 2 of the Monsters of Rock Cruise Week and we're not even on the boat yet.  If you want to read what happened just prior to this All Star Jam finale, click here

So the Winger finale of covering Van Halen and bringing out special guests Andy Timmons of Danger Danger and Courtney Cox of Paradise Kitty (photos and video in previous post) was a good precursor to the headlining event this evening.

It was billed as "Hurry", a Rush tribute band featuring Sebastian Bach of Skid Row, Steve Vai and "other surprise guests" - this sounded like it was going to be cool.

Oddly, it started off with a Led Zeppelin cover!

The always amazing Frank Hannon of Tesla (but whose on this night band included Jimmy D'Anda of Lynch Mob on drums) opened the night with a killer version of "Immigrant Song"

As Frank ended the song, the audience was already on its feet as Sebastian Bach came on launching the "Hurry" part of the set "The Spirit of Radio".  Here's the video:

This led into "Limelight" and Sebastian and band seemed to be having a blast.  Sebastian was definitely one of the most talked about artists on the cruise and perhaps you've heard some of the stories. I'm not sure what's true and what's not, but over my posts, I'll just let you know what I witnessed and this set was definitely a cool one off highlight of the week.

"Red Barchetta" was next on the setlist and towards the end of the song I noticed Steve Vai walking to the side of the stage. He strapped on his guitar and joined the band for the last 30 seconds or so and then they launched into a LONG guitar driven version of "Tom Sawyer"  The video of both songs is below:

You can see in the above video, towards the end of "Tom Sawyer", Sebastian tries to get Vai to do a little of David Lee Roth's "Yankee Rose".  While it's just a teaser here, it was a hint of things to come later on the boat.

The above was the only portion of the show Vai joined in for, but it was not the end of the "Hurry" set.  Sebastian finished it off with "Closer to The Heart"

After Sebastian left the stage, Gus G. and his band came out with a little "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath.

The lineup switched up yet again for a cover of Deep Purple's "Highway Star" with Chaz West on vocals (where he would remain for the remainder of the set) and Akira Takasaki of Loudness on lead guitar.  Akira had some guitar issues during the song and left the stage for a couple of minutes while his guitar tech switched out one of the Marshall heads as the band went into a keyboard/bass jam, he then came back out and finished the song with a great solo.

Akira left the stage and Lexii Lynn Frazier joined  Chaz West for a Van Halen cover. For some strange reason they chose "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" which we had all just seen Winger do about an hour earlier to end his set. Point Winger.

The night ended with the Aerosmith classic "Sweet Emotion" where Marc Ferrari of Keel fame was joined by Frank Hannon. (By the way Hannon fans...there is going to be A LOT of Tesla coverage coming up from their shows on the boat).

What a great way to end two nights of pre-sail parties.  If this was a taste of what it would be like on the boat, it was going to be amazing!

Once again, afterward, we went into the casino and had a couple of drinks at the packed bar but decided we should head back to the hotel and get ready for the next day...we might need our strength.

So had I decided yet if it was worth it?  Oh yeah...I had already decided it was worth it.  Our first day on the boat coming next.

Frank Hannon Band - The Chance, Poughkeepsie, NY March 21, 2015 + GUITAR PICK CONTEST

Hot damn!  What a great surprise this show was!

I've seen Tesla at least a dozen times in the past three decades or so and they are always somewhere between good and great live depending on that night's setlist, so I should have hopped right on this one to see what guitarist Frank Hannon does on his own, but that was not to be...until some last minute plans changed and my buddy had an extra ticket.  He called and said Frank was hitting the main stage at the Chance at 10pm (moved from their smaller upstairs venue, The Loft) and hell, it was Saturday and hopefully it would be good.

We walked in right at 10 and had about ten minutes to grab a beer, check the merch table and say hi to a few other friends in attendance.  Then Frank himself welcomed the crowd and the curtain went up for over two hours of simply great music.

Frank's band is a power trio featuring Aaron Leigh on bass and Kelly Smith on drums that does not stay strictly within the confines of rock. The small crowd (Frank has played numerous sold out shows with Tesla at The Chance, but on this night the crowd was less than a hundred. Frank joked - or maybe not a joke- that two fans up front were the only two in attendance at his first solo show there and with the improvement in the size of this crowd, that by the time he was 80, he'd be selling out the place himself!) was fully engaged and there was a great connection between band and audience that had them play a very long set as we all wanted more.

How long?  The set ran about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

I thought it would be filled with Tesla covers (I did not realize how many solo albums Frank has), but actually the only Tesla cover came during the acoustic set (The show was about 70 minutes electric, then 30 acoustic, then last 30 or so electric again) when he played the 90 second acoustic intro to "Love Song."

That's not to say the show was short on covers.  One of the best was a nod to one of the greatest power trios of all time when they covered "Working Man" off Rush's debut album.  Sweet! Throw in some Johnny Cash, James Gang, Santana, classic blues and snippets of Led Zeppelin, Parliament Funkadelic, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Montrose and some amazing standards including a beautiful version of the instrumental "Sleep Walk," the 1959 hit by Santo and Johnny that you all know even if you don't recognize the name.  Go ahead and youtube it...we'll be here when you get back.

Most of the show concentrated on Frank's solo work, especially his newest album "World Peace" of which he played 9 of the 13 tracks.  Now reading that, I know what you might be thinking. "Ugh!  I go to see the guy from Tesla and he plays his whole new album I don't know!"  I've been to plenty of unfortunate shows like that where the new material was crap, but this show was the exception.  I didn't know any of this material going in and it's just catchy killer rock (from hard to southern to acoustic to guitar jammy.)  Frank is the singer as well as guitarist and has a great voice.  I was totally blown away and then add in the cool mix of covers and standards from as far back as the '20's and I'm telling you this show was as good as any Tesla show I've ever seen (and better than quite a few).

Here's the setlist:

  • Born Free
  • The Picture
  • New York City
  • World Peace
  • Train / Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash) / Brand New Shoes ("Train" is all I wrote down.  I know it was a cover but I'll be damned if I remember which "train" song he did)
  • Love Is Like A Fire
  • Electric Chair
  • Working Man (Rush)
  • Sleep Walk (Santo & Johnny)
  • Mobius Flip
  • Love Song (Tesla - acoustic intro Only
  • Gypsy Highway
  • Cocaine Blues (Luke Jordan via Keith Richards version)
  • Instrumental (didn't know this one)
  • Heavy Metal Hippie
  • Montrose snippet (A guy in the pit was wearing a Montrose shirt and the band kicked into about a minute or two of a tune for him when his buddy yelled out "Montrose!"
  • Down The Road
  • Funk #49 (James Gang cover but so much more.  Opens it playing the solo from Led Zeppelin's Heartbreaker right into the intro/main riff of Funk #49 and then the band jammed out on this throwing in bits of Red Hot Chili Peppers "Give It Away", Parliament Funkadelic's "Thank You" and "We Got The Funk", Some of that Peter Frampton tube guitar talking thing...just an epic jam)
  • Sweet Southern Sound
  • Electric Warriorz
  • Hope You're Feeling Better (Santana)
  • Eye of the Mind

I caught a pick during the performance and after the show Frank and the band came out to meet the fans and I got another one...so guess what gang...
