Audience Audio Master Tapes - SLAYER / TESTAMENT Poughkeepsie February 15, 1991 (30 years ago today)

With no shows to go to, it's been a long while since I posted. By chance yesterday I walked by one of my shelves and saw my audience audio master tapes for Slayer (with Testament opening) at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie NY on February 15, 1991 and I realized today was the 30th anniversary so I got inspired to digitize and upload to Youtube in celebration.

As always most of these tapes were recorded with a mono Radio Shack Realistic cassette recorder that I snuck in and had to keep out of site while recording - so take these recordings for what they are and remember 30 years ago we couldn't bring an iPhone with professional recording equipment built in with us to shows.

I actually won these tix on WPDH (Poughkeepsie's Home of Rock n Roll). If I remember correctly, and I may not be, I think they gave away 10 pairs at once and knowing most folks who listened to 'PDH probably weren't Slayer fans, they were the easiest tickets I ever won.  First attempt, they answered the phone and got my pair.

This was a great show and because I was recording it, I didn't brave the pit.  I was sitting in the metal bleachers in the back (which during the Slayer encore breaks you can hear the audience stomping).  Like many shows at the Civic Center, as soon as it ended we headed around back to try and meet the bands and I met Chuck Billy of Testament and got his autograph (which when I find, I'll post along with this).

I had just turned twenty in that December two months before this show, now I'm fifty...damn...time flies, but I'll still be going to shows once they start up again.

Hope you dig this and if so, please subscribe to my Youtube channel where I'll try to post the rest of these tapes on a more regular basis.

BLACK FLAG August 15, 2019 Poughkeepsie, NY VIDEO & PHOTO Review

I was stoked when I saw The Chance announce this show a few months back.  We get a good amount of classic hard rock and metal in Poughkeepsie, but maybe two good classic punks bands a year and I've never seen Greg Ginn with Black Flag.  The closest I've seen to Black Flag was Rollins Band in 2003 did a very short tour where the whole set was Black Flag covers (and a few Ramones tunes at the very end).  It was particularly cool when Rollins Band started the set fronted by Keith Morris to play a Morris era Black Flag before Rollins came out to cover his tenure.  That show was awesome, but I've always wanted to see one of the Ginn versions and somehow I had always missed them.

Well this was a great show.  Basically a 21 song setlist of greatest hits banged out in an hour.  Ginn killed it on guitar nailing those classic riffs and the rhythm section was excellent, but Mike Vallely really nailed the vocals throughout.

Towards the end of the set, Vallely talked about seeing the band at City Gardens in Trenton NJ in 1984 and how he hoped his performances of these songs honored the original works by the previous four vocalists (they do). His stage presence is most definitely learned at Rollins University.  He put in his all and was literally drenched in sweat by the end of the show.

Actually here's one of the videos I shot of "TV Party" followed by "Rise Above" and it's between these two songs Vallely speaks as described above.

Here's the full setlist (the first few songs may be slightly out of order) with the other two videos (and various photos) I shot mixed in.  Marceliano and Jeff from openers The Linecutters came out to sing back up on a few tunes plus Marceliano added guitar on the final song, their cover of Louie Louie.   The Linecutters played right before Black Flag and The Fatalitees opened the show.

Setlist:
Depression
No Values
Fix Me
Black Coffee
Room 13
Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie

Loose Nut (video link directly above)
White Minority (video link above - in the same video as "Loose Nut")
Bastard in Love

Six Pack (with Marceliano and Jeff of the Linecutters on background vocals - video link directly above)
I've Had It
Slip It In
I Can See You
Revenge
Clocked In
Jealous Again
Can't Decide
Nervous Breakdown
TV Party (video link towards beginning of review)
Rise Above (with Marceliano and Jeff of the Linecutters on background vocals) (Video link towards beginning of review - in same video as "TV Party)
Louie Louie (with Marceliano of the Linecutters on guitar and background vocals)

When the set ended, Ginn packed his guitar and came out immediately to meet and greet with anyone who stuck around (as did the rest of the band).  Ginn also was out and about before Flag's set and genuinely seemed to love interacting with the fans, chatting, taking pictures, signing autographs.  Very cool to not only finally see the band, but meet the legend as well (here's my shot with him).

The show was well attended.  No Balcony, but downstairs was full and the pit (as you'll see especially in the TV Party/Rise Above video) was jumpin'.  A great way to spend a Thursday night and I hope The Chance keeps booking these classic punk shows.  So nice not to have to drive to NYC or Brooklyn to see them.

JACKYL - The Chance, Poughkeepsie NY - March 10, 2019 Review with Video and Photos

I'm playing catch up on posting videos and photos and here's some from when Jackyl returned to The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY on March 10, 2019 for the first time since 1993!

The fans came out and had a great time with the band and I think this will likely become a regular stop going forward for Jesse James Dupree and the boys.

I've seen Jackyl many times over the years (first time being Woodstock '94, the 25th anniversary of which is coming up soon) and you always know you're going to get a fun kick in the ass live rock n roll show when they hit the stage and this night was no different.

Whenever Jackyl comes around, me and my crew are there - I highly suggestion you do the same when they come to your town.

Here was the setlist for the night.  Links to the videos I shot for four of the songs are below as well

Blast Off
My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine's Ass
Mental Masturbation
Encore (It Makes My Bic Dig Her)
Screwdriver
Down On Me (video below)

Push Comes To Shove
Just Because I'm Drunk
Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers cover) - video below

Secret of the Bottle
I Stand Alone
When Will It Rain
Dirty Little Mind (video below)

Redneck Punk
She Loves My Cock
The Lumberjack (video below which starts at the chainsaw solo and plays through to the end)

Last In Line - The Chance, Poughkeepsie, NY - May 4, 2019 - Setlist and HD Video

Saw Last In Line on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Last In Line features Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice of Dio's classic line-up along with bassist Phil Soussan who took over upon Jimmy Bain's passing. Andrew Freeman, a local to the area, is a powerhouse on vocals.

The band started out paying tribute to Ronnie James Dio by performing sets made up of classic Dio songs (just songs by the band Dio, unlike Dio Disciples who include Black Sabbath and Rainbow era RJD songs in their sets as well).  This soon led to the release of an album of original material, Heavy Crown, which first brought the band to the Chance in March of 2017 - and now they've returned supporting their 2nd album, "II"

I thought the band were fantastic in 2017 and I would say they were even better this time around.  I originally went to hear the classic DIO tracks performed by these original members; and even now with two albums of original material, they still dedicate nine of the 16 songs played this night to those classic tracks - but their original material is hard driving kick ass hard rock/metal which easily stands tall with the Dio classics.  Lesser bands would see constant beer and bathroom runs when the oft dreaded "we're gonna play you a new one" is said, but these tracks instead make you want to do a merch booth run at the end of the show to pick up the albums.

I didn't take any photos at this show and just one video of the band performing the Dio track from which they took their name.  See them when they come around.

Here's the video and the full set they played that night.

Setlist:
Landslide
Stand Up and Shout (Dio)
Straight Through The Heart (Dio)
Year of the Gun
Holy Diver (Dio)
Give Up The Ghost
The Last In Line (Dio)
Martyr
Black Out The Sun
Starmaker
Evil Eyes (Dio)
Egypt (The Chains Are On) (Dio)
Rainbow In The Dark (Dio)
Encore:
Don't Talk To Strangers (Dio)
Devil In Me
We Rock (Dio)

LYNCH MOB Poughkeepsie, NY - April 19, 2019

On Friday, April 19, the current version of Lynch Mob made a return trip to The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The band's line up has changed a bit since their stop last year.  Of course George Lynch is on guitar and the great Sean McNabb remains on bass.  Filling out the rhythm section was Matt Starr on drums and vocal duties were by Nathan Utz.  The band was tight and the vocals were strong.

Here's a video I shot of the band doing an excellent version of Dokken's "When Heaven Comes Down" so you can give them a listen.

As always the band played some Dokken tunes, but this was the fewest I've ever seen them do.

They opened with four straight Lynch Mob tunes - Street Fighting Man, She's Evil but She's Mine, River of Love, and Tangled in The Web - before the above "When Heaven Comes Down" - a nice deeper cut.

Sweet Sister Mercy was next followed by the Lynch classic from the Dokken era "Mr. Scary" and then one of Dokken's biggest hits "It's Not Love".

The band ended the main set with three more Mob tunes - Testify, Believers of the Day, and No Good before leaving the stage for a short encore break.

The band returned to the stage with a bit of a puzzling encore of "Wicked Sensation." Playing "Wicked Sensation" was obvious, we knew that was coming, but about 2/3 of the way through the song, Utz left the stage and the band went into a very long 10 to 15 minute jam which started with a funk feel and then went into an almost standard jazz jam. It really showed off the playing of not just Lynch, but Starr and McNabb's chops as well before eventually coming back around and Utz returning to the stage for another chorus or two of Wicked Sensation to end the night.

It was interesting, but it would have been much better placed earlier in the set.  It was a very odd way to end the show.

The other odd thing about the show was that for much of it, George played standing back by the drum riser more or less facing away from the audience.  Eventually George gave the audience more face time towards the middle to end of the set.  George came out after the show and hung and chatted for a good hour or so and my buddy said George said the stage monitors were problematic and he had much better sound back there, but when he saw the audience was digging it and was not experiencing the sound issues he was he just rolled with it and went out front more.

As always a solid rockin' show and I'll be sure to be there next tour when they come back to town.

Length: 45 minutes

What is the Live Tape Project?

Well back in the day for a few years I audio taped a lot of the shows I went to.  I have all my master tapes (probably about 80 to 100 shows) and have always wanted to transfer and upload them.  They are all the different bands I saw at the time, not just the band in this post.

Finally getting around to doing it.  I recently purchased a TEAC LP-R550USB stereo which includes among other things a cassette player and CD Recorder.  I'm recording the cassettes direct to CD, then importing them as .wav files and then uploading to YouTube.  I'll then post the link to the shows here and in the Facebook group as I upload each one.

Quality wise, most were recorded on a mono Realistic recorder with built in microphone which in some cases (and based on the recording conditions) captured a great recording you'll listen to over and over and in other cases it might be barely listenable and something you'll only listen to if you were there and need to remember if they played a particular song that night.  Later on I upgraded to a stereo recorder and some of those sound great.  It's a mixed bag and you never know what the next installment will bring.
