SPINAL TAP 35th Anniversary Reunion 4/27/19 NYC Full Q&A and Concert

On April 27, 2019 there was a 35th Anniversary screening of "This Is Spinal Tap" at the Beacon Theatre in NYC as part of the Tribeca Film Festival.  The movie was billed as including a post screening discussion with Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel), Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins) and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) plus a musical performance.  Having never seen Spinal Tap live, I had to take advantage of this possible last chance.

A few minutes after 8pm, Rob Reiner was introduced and came out to welcome the crowd as well as McKean and Guest who were sitting in the audience.  He spoke for a couple of minutes letting the crowd know his favorite line from the film was "There's a fine line between stupid and clever" before introducing the flick.

The audience cheered during the concert scenes as if they were there in the crowd, but the loudest response of the night was when Nigel let us know his amp goes up to eleven!

When the movie ended, Rob Reiner came back out and introduced the three main cast members.  They each took a seat for a 20 minute talk which was half discussion and half audience Q&A.

I wasn't sure how cool security would be with filming and I wanted to make sure to get a video of at least one song (which ended up not being an issue - I filmed the whole concert portion - video link is below), so I decided to just audio record this segment keeping my phone out of site.

I missed about the first 2 minutes where the guys start by saying how young they look on screen which leads to how others in the movie have aged and specifically Paul Schaffer which leads to a story about the character he was based on.

Here's a few time stamps if you care to listen to the audio at the link below:
  • 00:00 starts in the middle of the story about Lou "Kick My Ass" Dennis
  • 00:30 talking about early screening notes and making of the film
  • 06:00 Real rock stars who auditioned (John Densmore of the Doors, Paul Stanley of Kiss, etc)
    • Is it common knowledge that Paul Stanley auditioned for a role in Spinal Tap?  I've never heard this before.
  • Audience questions start at the seven and a half minute mark:
  • 07:30 "Was it based on Iron Maiden?" No, but they bring up the influences of Uriah Heep, Van Halen, Saxon and Black Sabbath
  • 11:00 "Why was the cucumber wrapped in tin foil?"
  • 12:30 "Where did they learn their British Accents?"
  • 13:30 "What is the deal with the herpes sores subplot that was cut from the film?" with mention of Cherie Currie of the Runaways who played lead singer of The Dose in the cut segment.
  • 15:00 "What are you favorite cut scenes from the film?"
  • 17:00 Christopher Guest asks for one final question which turns to mayhem and they say thank you and go get their instruments.  That set is described below and yes, that is audio AND video

Here's the Discussion/Q&A audio:

The musical portion opened up with a "Celtic Blues" which led right into "Hell Hole".  Sure it would have been more awesome if it was electric, but I'll take unplugged Tap over no Tap any day.

"(Listen To The) Flower People" complete with excellent shushing was next.  This was followed with "Rainy Day Sun" introduced as the B-side to that excellent A-side.

The Nigel Tufnel penned "Clam Caravan" was next as it was explained the original title was "Calm Caravan" but there was a typo on the album and the song contains no clam references.

The first song Nigel and David ever wrote together, "All The Way Home," had the audience clapping along.

Before following up with "Big Bottom" the band explained how in the past they would invite all touring bassists in the area to join them on stage and they were most impressed with Robert Trujillo of Metallica and his bass playing stance which Harry Shearer demonstrated.  But for tonight they would just let Shearer's bass do the talking instrumental wise with a finger snapping jazzy sing along of the classic.  NOTE:  My camera stopped during this song and about 30 seconds of it is missing in the middle.

A stage hand brought out an extra microphone stand as the boys told the story of the last time they played the Beacon Theatre as Spinal Tap where they decided as a joke to perform as a folk band as the opening act for the Tap metal to follow, it didn't go over well with much of that audience.

They then introduced special guest Elvis Costello who shared that he made his Carnegie Hall debut along with Spinal Tap back in 2000. The quartet performed "Gimme Some Money" together.

The night ended with a performance of "Sex Farm."  Quite the blast and here's the video so you can all check it out:

Live Tape Project #1: Little Caesar - Middletown, NY - June 17, 1990 Full Concert Audio

The Live Tape Project #1 - Little Caesar at the Orange County Speedway in Middletown, NY on June 17, 1990

Little Caesar were opening Kiss on the "Hot In The Shade" Tour with Slaughter playing between the two bands.

Setlist:
  • Down-N-Dirty
  • Hard Times
  • Drive It Home
  • Chain of Fools
  • God's Creation
  • Rock-N-Roll State of Mind
  • Wrong Side of the Tracks
Sound Quality: It's a bit muffled for the first 45 seconds and then it improves drastically as I was probably pulling the recorder out of my pocket and I think it sounds really good for what it is through the rest of the set. I believe I recorded this with a mono Realistic recorder with built in microphone.

Length: 30 minutes

What is the Live Tape Project?

Well back in the day for a few years I audio taped a lot of the shows I went to.  I have all my master tapes (probably about 80 to 100 shows) and have always wanted to transfer and upload them.  (added note - they are all the different bands I saw at the time, not just the band in this post)

Well I'm doing it.  I recently purchased a TEAC LP-R550USB stereo with includes among other things a cassette player and CD Recorder.  I'm recording the cassettes direct to CD, then importing them as .wav files and then uploading to YouTube.  I'll then post the link to the shows here and in the Facebook group.

Quality wise, most were recorded on a mono Realistic recorder with built in microphone which in some cases (and based on the recording conditions) captured a great recording you'll listen to over and over and in other cases it might be barely listenable and something you'll only listen to if you were there and need to remember if they played a particular song that night.  Later on I upgraded to a stereo recorder and some of those sound great.  It's a mixed bag and you never know what the next installment will bring.

My plan is to upload one or two a week and get them all uploaded by the end of 2018.  Should be a fun ride and I hope you enjoy some of the shows that get posted.

Four By Fate / Richie Scarlet - The Chance, Poughkeepsie NY June 6, 2014 Concert Review & Photos

Back in June of last year, Four By Fate played their second show ever at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY.  With Tod Howarth (vocals/guitar) and John Regan (bass) in Four By Fate headlining and Richie Scarlet opening it was like a Frehley's Comet family reunion.

It was a damn good show of mostly Frehley's Comet covers as well as songs by other artists the other members of the band had been in - drummer Stet Howland (W.A.S.P.) and lead guitarist Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly).   Throw in some Beatles, Kiss, Humble Pie (John Regan has long been the bassist for Peter Frampton) and Cheap Trick as well (I'm pretty sure one of the guys did a stint in Trick or maybe something like Robin Zander's solo band).

Richie Scarlet aka "The Emperor of Rock n Roll" kicked ass as always opening in the middle of the crowd with "Beck's Bolero" in a set that included a cover of "Crimson and Clover", as well as "2 Young 2 Die" (dedicated to baseball legend Don Zimmer who passed away two days earlier) and "Shot Full Of Rock" off Ace Frehley's "Trouble Walkin'" album.

At the time of the show I was backed up with shows to report on and knew I'd get around to this eventually.  Well yesterday Four By Fate posted the following on Facebook, so I figured no time like the present...

"Changing Of The Guards:

Hello Four By Fateful's. Tod and John here to fill you in on what's up these days with FOUR BY FATE.

As we eagerly approach the 2nd part of our stretch to finish the new release, there have been some changes made to the lineup.

Joining the FOUR BY FATE family is legendary drummer AJ Pero of Twisted Sister/Adrenaline Mob fame and New York's own Patrick James of Pound/ Flywheel on Lead/Rhythm guitars.

The road for FOUR BY FATE is an exciting one and with each turn we are blessed with wonderful talent, strength and the promise of crossing an epic finish line. We, as band, are grateful for all the good times and creativity that both Stet Howland and Sean Kelly brought and shared with the band. More than that, we are blessed to have them as brothers, a bond that will always remain.

Both Stet and Sean will always be a part of the FOUR BY FATE family and we wish them nothing but tremendous success in all that they do. We hope to cross paths again in the not so distant future.

From Sean Kelly:"While the time has come for me to focus on new musical horizons, I want to extend my very best wishes to John, Tod, Pat, and AJ, all players and people of the finest caliber. I also want to thank Stet Howland for the good times and friendship we shared, a true drum legend! It was an honor to launch the good ship Four By Fate with John, Tod, and Stet....long may it sail!”

From Stet Howland:"I love these guys and we will all continue to rock and cross paths down the line"As of this week, 6 songs went out into the hands of very interested parties that will eventually be a part of the launching of our release tentatively entitled: ‘Rhythm of the Curve’

It won’t be too much longer before you have a full length CD, Download, Video and more in your ‘Fateful’ hands.

Our best to all,

Tod Howarth

John Regan"

Glad I got to see this gig and it was a great night of rock n roll.  While Stet and Sean will be missed, it's good to see this is an amicable parting and their replacements should continue to kick some ass.  I'll definitely check out the new lineup when the album is released and they come back to The Chance.

Here's the setlist:

Calling to You (Frehley's Comet)
Something Moved (Frehley's Comet)
Into The Night (Frehley's Comet)

Ace Frehley - Sugar Loaf, NY November 14, 2014 Concert Review and Photos

I've had numerous "concert Gods looking down on me moments this year."  Tickets to this sold out, second show of Ace Frehley's "Space Invader" tour was one of them.

I was on vacation in Florida at the end of September for the 80's In The Park Festival and had to get up early on that Friday (okay...maybe 10:00am is not usually early, but when your on vacation for a rock fest, trust me, it was a battle to roll out of bed at that hour) and get my fingers limber and ready to type as soon as 10am hit...

Well the ten o'clock hour hit and Ticketmaster now does automatic refresh and I sat there for 4 minutes, getting annoyed, as the page would refresh and not give me the opportunity to get tix.  Then after 4 or 5 minutes the refresh stopped working.  I exited out of the page, got back to it and got to the point where you enter the number of tix you want and type in the code.  I was sure at this point I would be getting crap seats for me and my 5 friends.  Instead, somehow, we got 6 front row right orchestra seats!  Having just been there to see Tom Kiefer, I knew these would be great seats (in actuality, the Sugar Loaf Theater only holds about 600 or 700 people and there is not a bad seat in the house).  Once again, thank you concert Gods!

So as I write this, there have only been three shows on this tour so far and it looks like we got the best one with the most songs played.  It appears to be the only show where "Change" was played in full plus we got the full encore that was not played at the first show.

So I'll just say it...this was a great show.  Really solid setlist with an awesome selection of Kiss songs mixed in with Ace solo and Frehley's Comet tunes.

Ace's band is fantastic and all share lead vocals as various points in the show with drummer Scot Coogan singing the bulk of of the Kiss tunes (and Ace commenting how he sounds like Paul Stanley used to.  I have to say Scot NAILS the Kiss tunes and it was not the only time throughout the night Ace threw jabs at his old band mates).

Bassist Chris Wyse is engergetic and forms a tight rhythm section with Coogan.  He sang lead on "Strange Ways" off of "Hotter Than Hell", but I think the key to this band is the "Emperor of Rock n Roll" himself, Richie Scarlet.  Richie not only kicks ass on guitar, but is so damn animated throughout the show it brings it to another level.  Richie's vocal lead turns come during "Breakout" as well as later in the set on "2 Young 2 Die" off of "Trouble Walkin."

This being only the second show of the tour, there were two or three moments where the songs went a little off the rails, but I gotta say I love the dirty street rock, not perfectly tight but tight enough for rock n roll vibe this band has.  Many of the songs come across much heavier than their studio versions and there was not a "let's go for a beer run" tune among them.

The setlist is below and you can see it's paced well.  Everyone coming is of course looking to hear some classic Kiss and the first taste is four songs in with the super heavy "Parasite" also off "Hotter Than Hell" and this goes right into "Snowblind," the only song off Ace's Kiss era solo album other than his hit cover of "New York Groove."  Following this immediately with "Love Gun" and the band has the audience in the palm of their hand for the remainder of the set.

The set was longer than I expected (a good thing) especially with the show starting a bit late with at least an hour between the opening act and Ace who didn't hit the stage til close to 10  The show didn't end until just before midnight which is late for the theater.  I was afraid they would cut the set, but we got everything on the setlist.

The sold out crowd (including Steve Brown of Trixter/currently Def Leppard who we spotted in the middle front row) roared approval after every song and numerous times started an "Ace! Ace! Ace!" chant including during the long encore break.  When Ace did come back out he said he was sorry that he didn't re-enter the stage during the loudest part of the audience chanting his name, but he "had to take a piss."  Ace's stage banter was a hoot through out.

So that's about it gang, great show, I got two guitar picks (one from Richie and one from Ace) and I will say this, if you're up front and want an Ace pick, I hope your seats are on the left side of Ace if you're facing the stage.  Ace throws out TONS of picks, but almost none of them to the right side.  But if you're on the right and rockin out, Richie will surely get you one.

Below is the setlist and a lot more photos.  If you dig this, please go to this link and follow us on Facebook and feel free to comment there.  If you'd like to share these photos, please just give us credit and let us know where you're sharing them and we'll share the link.  Also click on any of them to supersize them.  Follow us on Twitter as well to keep up with all the goodness and contests.

Once last thing for the more die hard Ace fans.  Does anyone know why Ace never plays Frehley's Comet's "Into The Night?"  I mean it was something of an actual radio hit and I've always wondered why he never plays it anymore.  Let me know if you know.

As always - Rock on and Enjoy! - Paul
