LYNCH MOB Poughkeepsie, NY - April 19, 2019

On Friday, April 19, the current version of Lynch Mob made a return trip to The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The band's line up has changed a bit since their stop last year.  Of course George Lynch is on guitar and the great Sean McNabb remains on bass.  Filling out the rhythm section was Matt Starr on drums and vocal duties were by Nathan Utz.  The band was tight and the vocals were strong.

Here's a video I shot of the band doing an excellent version of Dokken's "When Heaven Comes Down" so you can give them a listen.

As always the band played some Dokken tunes, but this was the fewest I've ever seen them do.

They opened with four straight Lynch Mob tunes - Street Fighting Man, She's Evil but She's Mine, River of Love, and Tangled in The Web - before the above "When Heaven Comes Down" - a nice deeper cut.

Sweet Sister Mercy was next followed by the Lynch classic from the Dokken era "Mr. Scary" and then one of Dokken's biggest hits "It's Not Love".

The band ended the main set with three more Mob tunes - Testify, Believers of the Day, and No Good before leaving the stage for a short encore break.

The band returned to the stage with a bit of a puzzling encore of "Wicked Sensation." Playing "Wicked Sensation" was obvious, we knew that was coming, but about 2/3 of the way through the song, Utz left the stage and the band went into a very long 10 to 15 minute jam which started with a funk feel and then went into an almost standard jazz jam. It really showed off the playing of not just Lynch, but Starr and McNabb's chops as well before eventually coming back around and Utz returning to the stage for another chorus or two of Wicked Sensation to end the night.

It was interesting, but it would have been much better placed earlier in the set.  It was a very odd way to end the show.

The other odd thing about the show was that for much of it, George played standing back by the drum riser more or less facing away from the audience.  Eventually George gave the audience more face time towards the middle to end of the set.  George came out after the show and hung and chatted for a good hour or so and my buddy said George said the stage monitors were problematic and he had much better sound back there, but when he saw the audience was digging it and was not experiencing the sound issues he was he just rolled with it and went out front more.

As always a solid rockin' show and I'll be sure to be there next tour when they come back to town.
